It was earthshattering news when announced: Takashi Miike, grandmaster of Japanese horror, would return to his beloved stomping ground after numerous escapades in other genres. Lovers of the land of the rising gore will undoubtedly remember his pioneering Audition, but to enrich your knowledge even more, we’ve asked Miike scholar par excellence Tom Mes to introduce the film.
With this film Miike digs even deeper into the history of Japanese horror stories. We follow the lives of a professional theater company who perform the famous Japanese ghost story: Yotsuya Kaidan. Countless summer nights have ended with scared children and sleepless nights after hearing this story about a destitute samurai who kills his wife so he can be with a young wealthy babe. It will be clear however that his wife doesn’t let a silly thing like death stop her from getting revenge. This story is interwoven in Over Your Dead Body where the parallels between fiction and reality bleed into each other creating a murderous dynamic between the protagonists. It’s clear that after several centuries Yotsuya Kaidan is still relevant and up to date. While this film begins extremely minimal and distant, the tension slowly builds up and gets under your skin. It culminates in a visceral bloodfest the likes of which only Miike can orchestrate. The master is definitely back with a vengeance!
